Bogota | Salt Mines of Zipaquira
There's a church buried in the rocks of the salt mines in Zipaquira. I'm not particularly religious, but it's hard not to be impressed at how a belief can inspire such dramatic work. The intense lighting and gothic shadows make you feel small. There's so much space carved out. In comparison, you take up such an insignificant amount. I was left with the impression that in such isolation, you'd either truly believe in another power, or you feel lonely.
The carvings are simple crosses - apart from the occasional statue. It's cold, with a heavy smell. The weight of the walls impress a sense of urgency and grandeur akin to some catholic churches in Europe. Each exhibit has a simple message and doesn't distract you from that message: God. Let his power become impressed and instilled within you.
They say that some people have weddings here. I could see that. I could also see a fashion show or some untamed Halloween party. The drama lends itself to a dynamic range of artistic and personal statements. For aspiring visitors - feel free to break away from the tour guide. You don't really need them because the hoards of people will most likely disrupt your line of site and experience. It's difficult to feel the magnitude of the work when you're boxed in by a bunch of other tourists. This is a personal preference though - take it or leave it.
